Whimsy Park Ready to Open!

Whimsy Park will officially open this coming Friday, May 5th, at 5 p.m.  That day also happens to be the first official day of Sequim’s great Irrigation Festival, the First Friday Art Walk for the month of May, and Cinco de Mayo all rolled into one fantastic celebration!

The Malcolm Clark Band (if you haven’t heard them, you’re in for a real treat!) will be the first to perform on the new Whimsy Stage, playing from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

So come on down, celebrate our community, and enjoy Sequim’s newest downtown gathering place!

If you can’t make it Friday evening, come by Saturday, May 6th, and wander through the first Farmers’ Market of the season–it’ll still be there for its opening this year (and next) before moving to its new location at the Civic Center Plaza and Cedar Street.

In the coming weeks, the students from Jake Reichner’s AP Arts class will be out adding to the Whimsy Art Wall, and we’ll paint a nice big white “movie screen” on the northern end of the wall in anticipation of hosting periodic “Movies on a Whim” during the summer months.

We also expect that, from time to time, the Whimsy Stage will be the place for all different sorts of performances and entertainment, from planned concerts to “pick up” jams where either individual musicians or a group show off their talents.

All the plants we’ve put it–donated or provided at steep discount–are thriving and we’ll be adding to our “garden” as time goes on to make Whimsy a beautiful, lush place to hang out.

The next big addition to the park, once we’ve got the funding, will be an adventure playground for little kids–a place equipped to spark their imaginations, inspire their creativity,  and great kids’ play.

Whimsy is a temporary park meant to beautify a part of Sequim’s downtown core until the lot is developed.  That may be a year, perhaps two, possibly more.  But until that time comes, it can hopefully serve as a wonderful outdoor gathering place for the community…and a daily celebration of our community.

While Whimsy started out on a whim, it wouldn’t have become what it is now and can be without the help of lots of people in our community.  Here’s a partial list of the partners who played a key role in making Whimsy happen for the love of Sequim:

  • Alcan Forest Products
  • Blake Tile & Stone
  • City of Sequim
  • Hermann Brothers Logging & Construction
  • Jim Bishop Excavating
  • Jose’s Famous Salsa
  • Bill Littlejohn
  • New Dungeness Nursery
  • Parry Construction
  • Peninsula Nursery
  • Rodda Paint
  • Rusting Rooster
  • Sequim High School—Jake Reichner’s AP Arts Class
  • Vision Nursery
  • Diana Young-Thompson

Be sure to thank them when you get the chance!

We hope you can join us for the celebration of our community: the grand opening of Whimsy Park on Friday, May 5th, at 5 p.m. or, for that matter, any time you’re in Whimsy Park!
